Did you know? Towards the end of the 6th century B.C., King Darius sent Skylax of Caryanda (current day Gölköy) on a circumnavigation of the inhabited sea. Skylax sailed the Eastern Mediterranean to Libya, south to the Arabian Peninsula and carefully documented and mapped all the territories, islands, harbors, and rivers he saw. He authored the first periplus a detailed manuscript of navigation used by Phoenicians and Greeks.
