Hotel Review: Merve Apart Hotel Bodrum

When a business owner loves what they do, it reflects in every facet of their operation.  Such is the case with Julia and Selcuk Gecit who built and run the Merve Apart Hotel and consistently obtain excellent reviews on Tripadvisor.

The open plan aparts are excellent value for money and for long term stays. Each room has twin beds, air conditioning and a kitchenette with refigerator. The hosts and staff are always on hand with advice, suggestions and reservations for boat trips, market tours and nearby excursions.  The Turkish BBQ night is a favorite with guests.

Merve Aparts are located in a residential area of southeast Bodrum and are about a 10 minute walk from downtown.  While not a boutique hotel by definition, the services and hospitality provided are very boutique.

Animal lovers will appreciate Julia’s many ongoing efforts to help local street dogs and cats find good homes.

Pastirma, Bastirma and a Short History of Pastrami

Take a slab of raw beef, camel or mutton and pack it with a thick paste of salt, garlic, peppers and fenugreek.  Now stick it under your sweaty horse’s saddle for a month while you ride through the steppes of Central Asia.  The result is pastirma, the ancestor to today’s pastrami.

Originally called ‘bastirma’ (pressed), pastirma is a favorite Turkish breakfast food usually served with scrambled eggs and is considered a rich delicacy.  Pastirma is also excellent as a meze with raki, or as a stuffing with cheese in boreks.

Featured Charter Gulet: Asfiye

The home port of most of the gulets we work with is Bodrum, though on occasion we stray outside of our backyard.  Such is the case with Fethiye based gulet ‘Asfiye‘, with one master and 3 double guest cabins.  A fellow foodie, the American owner has spared no expense on his 22 meter traditional gulet, and has used his extensive experience in the design world to decorate her interior with rich, plush fabrics and top of the line accessories.

Asfiye is ideal for exploring the Lycian Coast between Fethiye and Kemer, including Kas, Kalkan, Kekova, Demre and Myra.  Other ports can also be arranged for.  Southern Cross Blue Cruising has special pricing available for selected weeks, so contact us for a great deal on this handsome gulet.

This newly launched 36 meter is for active sale in Bodrum.

Excerpt from the specifications:

“The hull , based upon the traditional sailboats of  Eastern Med  from the 18 / 19 th.  century, has a generous beam with  moderate overhangs and a clipper bow . The long  keel  boat  with a relatively long parallel midship enables a very high volume inside with a living space comparable to sail  yachts  of  40 to 43 to  meters LoA. The boat has a sleek profile with a moderate sheer and flush deck . The sections are slightly hollow below waterline , which will give the boat very good  sea keeping abilities.  Even though designed as a motor sailer, the large beam with the relatively high ballast ratio enables a large sail carrying factor. “
