Hidden Treasures Around the Bodrum Peninsula

There is probably no more obnoxious class of citizen, taken end for end, than he who returns from vacation.

--Robert Benchley

After you've explored the Castle of Saint Peter and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, take time to explore the sights and attractions that are easy to miss but much loved by the locals.

The Turkish Ghost Town of Sandima
The Boatyards of Icmeler
Abandoned houses at the Greek ghost village of Sanirma near Yalikavak.

Bodrum is the world's largest wooden boat building community.

Walk all around the abandoned ghost town of Sandima. Located in the hills behind Yalikavak, this was once a bustling village which was abandoned as the local population migrated seaward. Many of the houses remain standing and can be explored. An excellent setting for a picnic.

An artists' studio and coffee/wine house are very well integrated into the village and the proprieter is happy to share his knowledge.

Explore Icmeler just a couple of kilometers from Bodrum and home to the largest and most sophisticated wooden boatbuilding center in the world.

When asked if he built according to naval architectural plans, one of Bodrum's leading gulet builder's laughed and famously replied `First I build the boat, then we create the plan.`

Farmer's and Textile Markets
Hidden Alleys and Cisterns
Fresh fruit and vegetables abound throughout Turkey and are one of the highlights of the gulet charter.

Strolling along one of Bodrum's shady side streets

Shop for bargains at the Bodrum Tuesday textile market and the Saturday Turgutreis fresh market to see how locals eat and live.

Stroll along the hidden lanes and alleyways of downtown Bodrum and discover local women hanging their washing while chattering over the garden wall, and little shops selling wares, spices and textiles.

Turkish textiles are varied, rich, and colorful and sold throughout the coast in Bodruml, Marmaris and Gocek.
Turkish textiles are world famous for their colors and designs, and excellent shopping opportunities for rugs, kilims, carpets, clothes and home furnishings are easily accessible.

Ancient Iassos
Underwater Ruins
Iassos is an undiscovered, pristine treasure on the northern route of the Blue Cruise. Gumusluk has underwater ruins which can be easily seen from your restaurant table on shore.
Visit the ancient ruins and beautiful Fish Market open air museum in Iassos (Kiyikislacik). Take a nap on cozy cushions under shady trees after fish lunch in Gümüslük (Myndos) with many underwater ruins.

Carian, Ionian, Lycian and Lydian ruins abound throughout the Western and Southern shores of Turkey and some are only accessible via your gulet.
Explore the peninsula's oldest ancient Lelegian ruins in Pedasa behind Konacik and visit the ancient sites and temples of Labranda and Euromos.

Village life is still a large part of Turkish culture, and the Blue Cruise offers many opportunities to visit quaint little towns in which people live off of the land. Turkish olive oil is as up and coming as Turkish wine is, and still very reasonably priced whilst exceptionally tasty.
Stay in the mayor's house in the ancient village of Heraklea on the eastern shores of Lake Bafa. Sample virgin olive oil sold roldside on the road to Lake Bafa, and tour an olive oil press.
