Health care in Turkey is two tiered, with a state operated system for its citizens, and is supplemented by private hospitals and medical facilities. The health care is generally very good, and private doctors are required to serve in the public state hospitals. Visitors have full access to private medical facilities. We strongly recommend taking out private medical/travel insurance if you have any concerns about a possible medical visit.

There are many pharmacies all over Turkey, and there is always a 24 hour designated pharmacy open in every region. Many medications which require prescriptions elsewhere (excluding narcotics) are available over the counter in Turkey.

The medical sector in Turkey is currently undergoing a boom based on medical tourism. Fertility treatment, cosmetic surgery, bypass surgery and hip/knee replacement are very popular with visitors seeking timely, economic treatment often not available through their own national health care systems, especially when combined with a gulet charter holiday for full recovery!
